Our vision depends on where we are standing

Is Jesus Is In My Boat?

At this moment, a memory comes into my mind.

Mark 4:35-41

It is night and Jesus is sleeping peacefully in the small fishing boat with his disciples out in the middle of Lake Galilee, a lake that is treacherous because of the unexpected storms that appear, then dissipate.

Suddenly, a high wind comes sweeping over the lake. Jesus still sleeps with the winds howling around him and water sloshing into the boat from the rough waves. The small boat, laden with those men, is in danger of sinking. These fishermen, who know this lake well, are on the verge of panic.

Someone finally gets the courage to shake Jesus awake – (I wonder if it was Peter who awakened Jesus? Peter was always the most impulsive of the disciples. He had a tendency to act first, think later.) I’m sure these men of the sea were wondering “How can He be sleeping like this in the middle of this storm?  Doesn’t He know we are in danger?”

Jesus opens his eyes, looks around taking in the bedlam, the fear in the men, the open boat awash with water, the wind and the waves.  He looks at his disciples with compassion mixed with sorrow, then stands in that rocking piece of wood with a sail and with a voice of authority, simply commands the winds to stop!

Can you hear the sudden stillness, as the waves gently splash against the boat and the clouds rush away so the stars appear in the dark night sky?  Can you see the looks of awe, amazement and disbelief in the disciples’ faces as they look around them and then remember the sadness in Jesus’ voice as he spoke about how little faith they had, even as He was in the boat with them.

“This rabbi whom we follow has this kind of power where the wind and the waves obey Him?  So WHY were we afraid?”

AND TODAY? –

I follow the same rabbi.. So hoa does this scene apply in my own live?

Today, am I restless and worried about things that are happening around me?

I have learned that it is too easy to not look honestly at situations.  For some reason we do not want to look at the realities?

Am I honest with God and with myself?  Do I talk with Him openly about the situations that trouble me and make me uneasy?

As I lose control of situations and see the waves slosh into the boat, am I afraid it is going down in these storms of life?

Have I looked around and do I see Jesus in this boat with me?

It is when I recognize my weakness and need for Him, I find he gives me His Strength. He takes control of the situation.
Sure, It may not be the way I want it, but I can relax and rest in Him, remembering what Paul wrote in Romans 8:28.  All things work together for the good of those who love the Lord and walk according to His purposes.”

What a wonderful and crazy joy (crazy by the standards of those who don’t know God) and peace beyond our understanding  to know that He is right here with me!

This is what Isaiah wrote over two centuries ago.:

Isaiah 26:3-4New International Version (NIV)

You will keep in perfect peace
    those whose minds are steadfast,
    because they trust in you.
Trust in the Lord forever,
for the Lord, the Lord himself, is the Rock eternal.

I do not need to worry or panic:  He is here with me.

Isaiah 41:10New Living Translation (NLT)

10 Don’t be afraid, for I am with you.
Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and help you.
I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.

MY PRAYER IS THAT EACH ONE OF US WILL DISCOVER THIS REALITY AND BE ABLE TO TRUST AND REST IN HIM. IT IS A PROCESS, AND WE OFTEN DO NOT SUCCEED. BUT, THE MORE WE STUDY HIS WORD AND DISCOVER HIS PROMISES, THE MORE WE WILL TRUST AND BE ABLE TO PRAISE HIM.

I WANT TO LIVE NO OTHER WAY!

  1. Oh, how we need His peace! And it is always there, waiting for us, if we are focused enough to walk in it. But daily events so easily can scramble our focus…. I’m speaking from experience here. He is faithful, and always restores our peace….
